~を込めて

with (feeling / effort)

N2 Pattern

~を込めて takes a noun for a feeling like 心 (heart), 愛 (love), 感謝 (gratitude) and says that the action is done with that feeling poured into it. It is the て-form of the verb 込める(こめる), “to put into, to load”.

English equivalents are “with all one's heart” or “filled with (love, gratitude)”. It is common in letters and on gifts: 愛を込めて = “with love”.

Doing something with feeling

Place feeling + を込めて before the verb to show the action was done sincerely and carefully.

心を込めて作る。

“I make it with all my heart.”

  • (こころ)= heart
  • = object marker
  • 込めて(こめて)= putting into (て-form of 込める)
  • 作る(つくる)= to make

感謝の気持ちを込めて、手紙を書いた。

“I wrote a letter filled with gratitude.”

  • 感謝(かんしゃ)= gratitude
  • = linking marker (gratitude's feeling = feeling of gratitude)
  • 気持ち(きもち)= feeling
  • = object marker
  • 込めて(こめて)= putting into
  • 手紙(てがみ)= letter
  • 書いた(かいた)= wrote

How to form it

Noun (feeling) + を込めて + verb

  • (こころ)= heart → 心を込めて(こころをこめて)= with all one's heart
  • (あい)= love → 愛を込めて(あいをこめて)= with love
  • 感謝(かんしゃ)= gratitude → 感謝を込めて(かんしゃをこめて)= with gratitude

Key idea

~を込めて literally means “loading” a feeling into an action. Whenever you want to say that something was done not just mechanically but with real emotion behind it, name the feeling and add を込めて.
