Word Lookup & Dictionary
Interactive Word Popup
The Word popup is the main source of information in our extension. It's your go-to place when trying to find out more details about a specific word or the context around it. The same popup opens whether you click a word in subtitles, manga bubble, or parsed web text. The Word popup serves three major functions.
To reiterate, the Dictionary view explains the selected word, while the AI Breakdown and Translation provide a full explanation and translation of the surrounding text that contains the selected word.
Word Frequency Rank
For most words, the Words tab shows a frequency rank indicating how commonly the word appears in anime and drama. The rank is color-coded::
- Green — top 1,000 most common words
- Yellow — ranks 1,001 – 5,000
- Orange — ranks 5,001 – 15,000
- Gray — above 15,000
In-Context Translation
At the top of the Words tab, an AI-generated translation shows what the clicked word means in this specific sentence — not its dictionary definition, but the meaning in context.
The same word can mean different things depending on what surrounds it. Here the dictionary entry is identical, but the in-context translation follows the sentence:
Dictionary Sources
Very important thing to know is that you can change the API that is used to fetch the dictionary data. This is very handy when there are some issues with the API (too slow, downtime etc.). This is only possible for the Video extension as of right now. You can make this change in Settings › Dictionary.
Custom Dictionary URLs
You can add up to three custom URLs for any public website. This can be done either in the settings of the Video extension or the extension popup of the Web extension. After adding a URL, a button will appear in the Dictionary view of the Word popup. Clicking it opens the URL in a single new window, which is reused for subsequent openings (no need to close it).
The selected word is automatically inserted into the URL before it opens. Please use the following format — {x} must look exactly like this and it will be replaced with the selected word:
Real life example with Jisho:
This will open the Jisho dictionary in a window with search results for the currently selected word
