~に加えて
in addition to
~に加えて(にくわえて)attaches to a noun and adds a further item or factor on top of it. It comes from the verb 加える(くわえる, to add).
It corresponds to English “in addition to” or “on top of”. The added item is very often marked with も (also). In formal writing the shorter form ~に加え appears with the same meaning.
Stacking one thing on top of another
State the first fact with に加えて, then give the extra fact that piles on. Both facts usually point in the same direction, two burdens, two advantages, two costs.
雨に加えて風も強い。
“In addition to the rain, the wind is strong.”
- 雨(あめ)= rain
- に加えて(にくわえて)= in addition to
- 風(かぜ)= wind
- も = also
- 強い(つよい)= strong
家賃に加えて、光熱費も払わなければならない。
“In addition to the rent, I also have to pay for utilities.”
- 家賃(やちん)= rent
- に加えて(にくわえて)= in addition to
- 光熱費(こうねつひ)= utility costs
- も = also
- 払わなければならない(はらわなければならない)= must pay
Unlike ~に限らず, which widens a statement to a whole broader group (“not just X”), ~に加えて simply places one more specific item onto the pile (“X, plus Y”).
How to form it
Noun + に加えて
- 雨(あめ)= rain → 雨に加えて(あめにくわえて)= in addition to the rain
- 家賃(やちん)= rent → 家賃に加えて(やちんにくわえて)= on top of the rent
- 仕事(しごと)= work → 仕事に加えて(しごとにくわえて)= in addition to work
Key idea
Picture a scale with one weight already on it. ~に加えて drops a second weight on the same side: whatever was already true, here is one more thing of the same kind.
