～ふりをする
pretend to
～ふりをする means to pretend: to put on an outward appearance that does not match reality. It attaches to a plain-form verb, or to a noun with の, and maps to English “pretend to ...” or “act as if ...”.
1. Pretending to do (or not do) something
With a verb in the plain form, ～ふりをする says that someone acts as if the action is (or is not) happening. Negative verbs are especially common: pretending not to hear, not to know.
聞こえないふりをした。
“I pretended not to hear.”
- 聞こえない（きこえない）= cannot hear (negative of 聞こえる, to be audible)
- ふりをした = pretended (past of ふりをする)
母が部屋に入ってきたので、寝ているふりをした。
“My mom came into the room, so I pretended to be asleep.”
- 母（はは）= my mother
- 部屋（へや）= room
- に = direction marker
- 入ってきた（はいってきた）= came in
- ので = because, so
- 寝ているふりをした（ねているふりをした）= pretended to be sleeping
2. Pretending to be something
With a noun, add の: Nのふりをする means “pretend to be N”.
彼は病気のふりをして学校を休んだ。
“He pretended to be sick and skipped school.”

- のふりをして = pretending to be (て-form, linking to the next action)
- 学校（がっこう）= school
- を = object marker
- 休んだ（やすんだ）= was absent from, skipped
How to form it
Verb (plain form) + ふりをする / Noun + のふりをする
- 知らない（しらない）= not know → 知らないふりをする（しらないふりをする）= pretend not to know
- 寝ている（ねている）= be sleeping → 寝ているふりをする（ねているふりをする）= pretend to be asleep
- 学生（がくせい）= student → 学生のふりをする（がくせいのふりをする）= pretend to be a student
Key idea
ふり is the outward show and する is putting it on: the behavior on the surface is deliberately different from the truth underneath.
